Innsbruck’s Nordkette does not only provide amazing views for people standing on top of the mountain, it also provides fantastic views for hang-gliders and paragliders.
As well as enjoying unique panorama views into far-away valleys, hang-gliders and paragliders can take advantage of the potential for long-distance flights due to the east-west-oriented mountain flanks.
The Nordkette is also very popular among internationally-renowned pilots such as Wolfgang Seiss: “The Nordkette is the perfect training area when I’m preparing for international competitions.”
Nordkette flying area
There are 3 designated take-off areas: Paragliders can choose between starting from Seegrube at 1,905m or even higher from just below the Hafelekar Peak at 2,300m. Experienced pilots often speak about a “take-off into nothing” as the mountain side drops very steeply directly after taking off - highly spectacular for pilots and onlookers but definitely not to be attempted by beginners! The hang-gliders, however, get the most attention because they take off directly beside the Seegrube restaurant’s sun terrace.
Paragliding and hang-gliding is possible at the Nordkette all year round depending on snow conditions. Lunchtime is the best time to take off, and April to August is the best time of year for pilots who are looking to make long-distance flights. The record for a hang-gliding flight from the Nordkette is 285.2km, for a paragliding flight it is 211.7km and for a fixed-wing craft flight itis 331.9km.
Attention!
The complete Nordkette Flying Area lies within Innsbruck Airport’s airspace. Due to this fact, flights must be registered with the local clubs. The Innsbruck Hang-gliding Club can be contacted via www.hanggliding.at and the paragliding club can be found here: www.innsbruckergleitschirmfliegerverein.org.
